Google Business Profile: Why Reviews Matter for Local SEO
When someone searches “Italian restaurant near me” or “plumber in Brussels,” Google doesn’t rank results the way it does for a regular query. It shows a local pack — a map and three listings — where your Google Business Profile plays a central role. And among the signals that decide your spot in that pack, reviews carry real weight.
Why reviews influence local rankings
Google has long confirmed that relevance, distance, and prominence determine local rankings. Reviews feed directly into prominence. A profile with plenty of recent reviews and a strong rating sends a clear signal: this business is active, frequented, and trustworthy.
But the effect doesn’t stop at ranking. Even at the same position in the local pack, a listing showing 4.8 stars and 200 reviews earns far more clicks than one with 3.9 stars and 12 reviews. Reviews work on two levers at once: your visibility and your click-through rate.
The four dimensions to watch
Not all reviews are equal. Four dimensions genuinely matter:
- Volume: the total number of reviews. The higher it is, the stronger the prominence signal — and the more credible your average rating becomes.
- Average rating: the sweet spot sits around 4.2 to 4.8. A perfect 5.0 with only a handful of reviews can even look suspicious to searchers.
- Recency: ten reviews this quarter beat a hundred reviews from three years ago. A steady flow shows the business is alive and busy.
- Responses: replying to reviews, positive and negative alike, is an engagement signal valued by both Google and your future customers.
How to earn more reviews (without buying them)
The most effective method is also the simplest: ask, at the right moment. Request a review right after a successful experience, when satisfaction is at its peak. Make it easy by sharing a direct link to your Google review form. And don’t forget to respond: every reply shows prospects you’re attentive and encourages others to speak up.
One thing to avoid at all costs: buying fake reviews. Google detects these practices, and a purge of fraudulent reviews can sink your rating overnight — to say nothing of the reputational risk.
Handling negative reviews
A negative review isn’t a disaster, as long as you respond calmly and professionally. A measured reply to legitimate criticism often reassures more than an unbroken run of five-star ratings. Acknowledge the issue, offer a solution, stay courteous. Prospects pay the most attention to how you handle dissatisfaction.
